France is the largest country in Western Europe and the third largest in Europe. Certain overseas territories are also considered to be part of the country. The European mainland is known as Metropolitan France. The topography of European France is varied, with the north and west consisting of plains and low-lying hills, while the south and east is more hilly and mountainous. The Pyrenees lie on France's southern border with Spain, and the Alps lie in part in the east of the country.
