About the Javanese language

Javanese is a member of the Malayo-Polynesian language group, which part of the wider Austronesian language family. With nearly 100 million speakers, Javanese is the most widely spoken Austronesian language, and the most spoken language in Indonesia. The Javanese language is related to the Sundanese, Madurese and Balinese languages. Javanese has fewer similarities with Bahasa Indonesia, the national language of Indonesia which is linguistically close to the Malay language. Javanese has a very old and rich literary tradition, which was written with the indigenous Kawi and later Pallava alphabets. Javanese is spoken primarily in central, eastern and northwest Java and by many people in Jakarta. Javanese is also spoken by migrant communities in Suriname (the former Dutch colony in South America) and in New Caledonia. Indonesian is the easiest of these languages to learn and will be understood throughout Indonesia.
