About the Afrikaans language
The Afrikaans language is an official language of South Africa and is also spoken in the surrounding Southern African countries as a minority language. Afrikaans is a West Germanic language that evolved from the Dutch spoken by settlers in the Dutch Cape Colony in the 18th century. Around 7 million people speak Afrikaans as a native language, and many millions more people speak Afrikaans as a second language or know some Afrikaans. It is the third most spoken language in South Africa and the main language of the western half of South Africa. Until as recently as the mid 20th century Afrikaans was thought to be a Dutch slang. Some Afrikaans words came from Bantu and Khoisan languages, as well as English, German, Portuguese and Malay, and hence Afrikaans could be considered a partially creolized language.
