Oromo is a Cushitic language spoken mainly by the Oromo people who inhabit Ethiopia, Northern Kenya and Somalia. Over 30 million people speak Oromo making it the most widely spoken language in Ethiopia, and the third most spoken African language (after Swahili and Hausa).
There are numerous dialects of Oromo, and not all dialects are mutually intelligible. Due to the regional importance of Oromo, and its similarity with neighbouring Cushitic languages, Oromo is spoken for practical purposes by around 2 million non-Oromo people.
Oromo is written using the Latin alphabet.
